The book initially reads like an advertisement or brochure; convincing you as to why meat goats are a good idea. Then the next thing you know you're immersed in so much information about goats. It doesn't claim to know everything or try to be the only book you'll need, as it offers even more resources and references to help you get more information about goats. Really great read!

We have no prior experience raising goats and this book as been our "Bible" for learning everything. We have nannnies and this book has given us the info we needed to assist in several deliveries. Highly recommend.

I've learned that reading about something first- and doing research before doing something is very worth while. These books are inexpensive, informative and a good place to start your research before spending a lot of money on fencing, housing, food, first aid etc-etc-etc. that you need for some of these endeavors.Biggest omission: nothing on slaughtering/processing the meat goats. It talks about selling them- (planning around cultural events) but not how/when to slaughter, different cuts of meat and some recipes. But I guess that it may have been too much for the book and you would buy another book on game processing anyway.

I have bought pretty much most goat books on Amazon. I loved goats and I dreamed of having a Boer goat farm.I did not start with this book. I bought many others and I now I regret not reading this book before starting my farm. I have learned many lessons the hard way. Some of those lessons were through loosing so many valuable goats. I believe the losses would have extremely reduced if not eliminated had I bought and read this book in the first place. There are so many lessons and simplified information that this book will teach you before starting your own project.I loved the 101 chapters on health and parasites. I like the organization of the book and how relevant it is. Many books on the subject while good may be mostly outdated or focused on a different country. This one even if it focuses on the United States, I believe the information is presented in a way that people outside US can benefit from as well. The book is great and I highly recommend. Thanks

Generally good and seemingly credible advice throughout this book. Its weakness is in what was left out. There are some important topics left relatively untouched. As a meat goat novice I was hoping to get some specific questions answered. Example: Castration of buck kids - advantages and disadvantages? Methods and how-to advice? Marketing wethers vs. intact bucks? Other basic things were left unsaid, like when to first breed a young female, timing breedings/kidding for meeting market and weather constraints, ear tagging and record keeping, etc.The various breed descriptions were brief and not very detailed, with exception of the boer breed description. That's another weakness of the book -- it's almost entirely centered around the boer breed with nearly all of the "Producer Profiles" focused on boer producers. I know the boer is the major meat breed, but I would have liked to see more discussion across the breeds. Finally, the Kindle version of this book is poorly formatted (if formatted at all). There seemed to be no alteration from the paper version of the book to accommodate the unique features of e-readers. Sidebars, photos, captions, and footnotes are lumped-in indiscriminately, making it confusing and redundant to read.Ultimately I was left feeling that I could have learned just as much reading free online articles, blog posts, and message boards.

We are just starting to raise goats and need all the help we can get. There is another book that is a must have for new goat farmers. Raising Goats for Milk and Meat. I purchased the book thru Heifer International for only 15.00 US dollars which is a donation for their cause. Also bought Raising goats for Dummies. I am sure there are other books that work well also. Storey's Guide and Raising goats for Dummies give very good information on a lot of topics. The Raising Goats for Heifer International is like going into a classroom with instructors.

My husband and I have a beef farm and we just got Boer goats this past spring/summer to expand our farm and help eat the shrub in some of our pastures. This book has a wealth of information that has answered all of our questions we had about winter feeding, fencing and birthing. We also have other Storey's Guides and all of them have been very helpful with the care for the animals on the farm. I highly recommend this series of books for whatever you need.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about raising or handling goats. It is a great starter book with a lot of very useful information on everything involving goats; for example, their general care, their physical and psychological requirements, their physiological make-up, their housing and containment, and just about anything you can think of, and it is simple to understand.
