There is lots of humor in this book. I would recommend reading it along with your children so the gems of humor aren't lost (for example: the last few people to "check out" book from the library ;) ). Every activity has something funny to say.*I do have one suggestion for the authors if they print this book in the future. I adore doing these activities with my children, unfortunately, the science aspect is lost :(. I want a little science box that explains WHY the activities are reacting like they are. The real magic is KNOWING the WHY, not just seeing the effects of a cool experiment. I was really disappointed with that aspect, simply because the activities are so much fun, I WANT to be able to explain why things are happening to my children. But since it isn't printed in the book, I don't know why myself!I personally didn't find the play on words on page 62 racist at all. It would be the same as making up an American name like "Whoflung Poo," instead the authors created a make believe Chinese wizard named Hu Flung Pu. I think if the play on words could be explained to someone who is Chinese, they would probably giggle. I know people who, for a time, moved from Asia to the US, and they would not have been offended. It is supposed to sound like, well, "who flung poo?"Even though I would have liked to have explained the real science behind the activities, my boys and I are enjoying spending time together and experiencing the neat results of the activities.
This is hands down the coolest potion books I have ever seen!!! I am so glad I ordered it! They aren't just making random stuff in bottles they are actually experiments with a magic twist! I am so excited to get the ingredients together and give this to my kiddo for summer!
I haven't seen anything else quite like this. I have a daughter with autism who loves fantasy. It's hard to get her into anything other than video games, but this book sucked her right in! We played Harry Potter movie theme music and downloaded the extra potion labels from the link provided in the bool. It really added to the atmosphere. Our first experiment was the 'Zombie Fire'. It was simple to put together, and the results were very cool. We can't wait to try the other experiments.
This is a dream book for kids who love magic and love creativity!My daughter and her friends have had hours of fun with magical book. Spells have been cast and "Awe" has been the conclusion of each page!The photo is of the love spell! I have been told that it worked!!!
The way this book is laid out is amazing, my kids will really feel like we are making potions and magic!
My 9yr old loves loves loves this book! There needs to be a sequel! Kept him busy for days!
This book is fantastic. My 8yo and 10yo have already had hours of fun and learning making the potions and we haven't even made half. The directions are clear and easy for a child to follow. Perfect for any elementary aged Harry Potter or fantasy genre fan.
This is a great book for children of all ages. We spent hours over the summer doing experiments!!
