Tolles and Tolles published this book back in 1979, before historic preservation had attracted much national attention. Now, after three decades, it's still one of the very best architectural surveys out there, and stands as testament to New Hampshire's vigorous preservation effort since (and before) then. The book includes 500 entries from every part of the state, organized into chapters by county. Portsmouth, Exeter, Rochester, Manchester and Hanover get the attention appropriate to their historical depth. Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth is called out for special treatment. Each entry includes a short descriptive paragraph, and about half of them include functional black & white photographs. There are introductory essays about architectural style and the broader contextual history of each, but the catalog of buildings is the real feature. Houses, churches, schools, mills and factories are included. There is very little space dedicated to tertiary structures, parks, public artwork, or modern buildings (though there are a few). Quite literally, all but about ten of these sites are still standing today. This book, and the state it covers, should serve as a standard for the rest of the United States. A book this good goes a long way toward encouraging preservation and preservation awareness.I recommend this book to architectural historians, craftsmen, preservationists, local historians, and serious heritage tourists.
Very nicely done. Beautifully researched and recorded. Answered my questions.
The book is a nice pocket guide for history or architecture fans. Good detail on buildings uses appropriate architectural terms and organized in a logical way.
