These series of transcripts, from radio presentations made by Napoleon Hill, circa 1951, are powerful and profound. I’ve read almost everything that Hill has written. This book represents some of his best work. As one who has written some less-than-favorable reviews of publications by the Napoleon Hill Foundation, I don’t say that lightly. Hill hammers home his points on what it takes to achieve a successful life with an electrifying energy and persuasiveness that leaves the reader captivated. Hill acknowledges the disaster wrought by his 1941 divorce from Rosa Beeland. It cost him over a million dollars that year (over $17,818,000 today) and the rights to the royalties of “Think and Grow Rich.†This setback took Napoleon Hill five years to overcome; here the reader assumes the reference is as much to the emotional component as the monetary. It’s a striking example of the strongest of emotions, love, and the consequences of being overcome by it. Hill was swept off his feet by a sexy beauty some twenty-five years younger than he. His loss of passionate control would soon cost him dearly. The author’s personal experiences (like this one) and his lifelong analysis of successful individuals can be of great benefit to the reader who applies the principles.
I read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill when I was in high school. I was motived to achieve my goal of going to college, getting a degree in something ‘useful’ (Dad’s request) and being independently wealthy. Well, I did all but the last one. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press, I had the chance to read and absorb this newly published book which is based on tapes and transactions of Dr. Hill’s radio program from the 1950’s and presented by the Napoleon Hill Foundation. "Success Habits" by Napoleon Hill is one of the series of books, a transcription of weekly radio programs presented by Dr. Hill in 1952 Paris, Missouri. Each chapter in the book is a transcription of one of his radio programs and cover different success principles, based on his original seventeen I read about in his other books. All of them are applicable to modern times and any reader who takes these principles and puts them to use in their life can benefit from them. They are old-fashioned sounding in places, but remember he was talking to rural folks in the mid-west USA way back in the 1950’s when religion was still a part of those people’s lives. Times were tough back then and Dr. Hill wanted to encourage people to overcome adversity, live the straight and narrow life and to work hard. Some of these ideas are alien to modern people, but maybe if they read this book and used his timeless ideas, their lives would be happier and and more successful. It is very much what I think of as ‘the Protestant work-ethic’ I learned about in high school. I wonder if Millennials even know what that means? This book covers Dr. Hill’s principles of Defining of Purpose, Accurate Thinking (think of today’s fake news outcries), Applied Faith (may turn modern atheist readers off), Causes of Failure (don’t give up and be decisive), Self-Discipline (Oh, how I wish all people would read this chapter), how to achieve a Pleasing Personality (I will need to re-read this chapter), and Cosmic Habit Force-or the law by which you use habits for a major purpose. Cosmic Habit Force reads like the habits the so-called Self-Help books today are exclaiming are the new and improved way to better your life. Sounds like Dr. Hill knew about them way back in the early 1900’s!Like all advice books, take what you want from the lectures and apply them to your own circumstances. Scattered throughout the book are examples of people who have used Dr. Hill’s principles and have overcome the odds to be successful people. They are examples from his time-period, but I bet you could think of other people you know who have done the same thing in this time-period.Over all, this is a timely book for these turbulent times. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Five out of Five stars.
Napoleon Hill is the author of the uber-popular book called Think and Grow Rich. It was one of the first books I read when I finally began putting my financial life in order in my mid-twenties, and I found in tremendously helpful. (It’s worth mentioning, though, that Hill may have been somewhat of a charlatan. He claims to have worked with hundreds of successful men in his time like Thomas Edison and, most notably, Andrew Carnegie. He even claims to have briefly taught Hitler, yikes. But historians say that there is no record of these meetings. Like, anywhere. 🤷 REGARDLESS, I still think his books are worth reading.)Success Habits is basically a very short version of Think and Grow Rich. It’s a collection of radio addresses given in Paris, Missouri in the 1950s, and it hits the high points of his philosophies on finance, mental attitude, spiritual growth, and, of course, success. The book is divided into 16 sections, but Hill actually covers only 8 topics: definiteness of purpose (i.e., finding your master life purpose), accurate thinking, applied faith, fifteen major causes of failure, persistence and decisiveness, self-discipline, pleasing personality, and cosmic habit force. Before you begin reading this book, you have to mentally prepare yourself for some old-timey writing. Hill can be long-winded and repetitive. He also tends to over-explain his points, and he talks about women in, well, the same way everyone talked about women in his time: as housewives and secretaries, barely worthy of being addressed (which is why he never bothers to use a “she†pronoun when addressing his audience, boo). But if you can see beyond these small annoyances, you’ll find a lot of concrete and helpful suggestions for getting your mental life in order. The gist of his philosophy is that you need to focus the power of your mind on the things you want in order to achieve them. It’s very similar to the philosophy of Tony Robbins in Awaken the Giant Within: How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny!.What I like best about this book is its emphasis on grit, perseverance, and hard work. I also like how Hill encourages people to focus on the things they want and not on the things they fear. As someone with a phobia list a mile long, I can appreciate this point. I also really enjoyed reading Hill’s various lists—sometimes if only for their enormous entertainment value. (I’m looking at you, “Twenty-five Traits of a Pleasing Personalityâ€). For example:*** Nine basic human motives are love, sex, material wealth, self-preservation, freedom, personal expression and recognition, immortality or life after death, revenge, and fear.*** Fifteen major causes of failure are purposelessness, physical deformities at birth, meddlesome curiosity in other people’s affairs, lack of major life purpose, inadequate schooling, lack of self-discipline, lack of ambition, ill health, unfavorable environmental influences during childhood, lack of persistence, negative mental attitude, lack of emotional control, the desire for something for nothing (gambling), procrastination, and giving in to fear.*** Seven basic fears are poverty, criticism, bad health, loss of love, old age, loss of liberty, and death.*** Twenty-five traits of a pleasing personality are a positive mental attitude, flexibility, a pleasing voice, a pleasing facial expression, tolerance, a sense of humor, common courtesy, the habit of going the extra mile, gracefulness, temperance, sexual magnetism (yass, queen), and the list goes on.I found a lot to love about Success Habits. Think and Grow Rich is definitely more comprehensive and better organized, but this is still a nice introduction to Hill’s philosophies. It’s worth a look.
