This book is engaging, but it's no "Shadow Divers". For one thing, there's not much plot and the author had to sort of create a narrative and stick in bits of Pirate history to glue it all together. Then the two primary personalities come off pretty badly. One is portrayed as crazy-violent, the other as an obsessed ego-maniac. I guess it's all meant to paint a picture, but it's a little too much personal information for me. The book also ends abruptly, with 97% devoted to a fruitless search and 3% a quick summary of what they found.So although I enjoyed reading it, and made it through to the end. It will not be a keeper and is headed to a used book store shortly.BTW, if you have not read "Shadow Divers", for Pete's Sake go get a copy now! Now that was an extraordinary tale.

I read this book after having read Shadow Divers because I enjoy Robert Kurson's writing. This is an easy to read historical account and quiet interesting. However, not nearly as compelling ash Shadow Divers. There is a lot of back story on the main characters; however, the accounting of the actual discovery of the sunken pirate vessel seems almost an afterthought in places. I would have appreciated more about the actual salvage and what they found. The book sort gets to the find, and states "and then they salvaged.. the end" .In contrast, the background on pirate history was extremely fascinating and caused me to research piracy a bit more and read additional accounts of the 17th century pirates. Overall worth your time, but not as good as Shadow Divers.

I don't read a lot of nonfiction and when I do I want it to read as smoothly as fiction. This pretty much fit the bill, with an exciting account of seasoned treasure hunters / divers finding a wreck of a fairly obscure merchant-captain-turned-pirate, Joseph Bannister. The author went off on a multitude of tangents including in depth studies of the lives of the men searching for the ship (which were interesting but not terribly relevant), and I'd say the actual story focusing on the tactical search for the wreck only constituted about half the book. Also, without spoiling the ending, the main characters fly all over the place at great expense doing a ton of primary research, and then the biggest piece of the puzzle ends up being in a newly published book that you can buy on Amazon - that element had a feel of deus ex machina about it. But overall it was an enjoyable and quick read, and I did learn something about Bannister, the treasure hunting "business," and the dangerous techniques used in underwater recovery efforts. Would recommend.

I have enjoyed the collaboration between Kurson, Chatterton, Kohler and now Mattera. Shadow Divers is one on my favorite books. Now this one Pirate Hunters is another. I have two hobbies, diving and treasure hunting, and this second book encompasses both. It is amazing the product that can be created when professionals get together. I nearly finished this book in 2 days. I could not stop reading it. That would have been a record for me.

It was the title of this book that first captured my attention. The fact that the book is based on a true story made it even better! The quest for the Golden Fleece really comes to life in the book. The life of a pirate is described to the point of being able to picture the images in your mindâ€™s eye. The sheer terror of running abreast of a pirate ship and crew causes your heart to beat faster. Clearly, this was not the career for the faint of heart! Sometimes, though, it was a career of necessity. The financial and emotional toll of the men and their families who searched for the Golden Fleece is clearly detailed. This book is about so much more than finding a ship or the treasure sometimes worth millions on it. Itâ€™s about doing those things that though you think might be impossible, drive you to the point of knowing who you really are and what you really value. You canâ€™t put a price tag on that!

I love a fast-paced adventure novel, filled with treasure hunters, deep sea divers and an anti-heroic pirate captain. And to find such a story, which also happens to be true....now that's a real treasure!This is the first time I have read Robert Kurson's writing, but I really am impressed by the way he takes a true story and writes non fiction as though it's an exciting adventure tale that just flies by. However, he could not have done this without some fascinating subject matter provided by deep sea divers and treasure hunters John Chatterton and John Mattera.The basis of this story is how Chatterton and Mattera have been commissioned to find the Golden Fleece, a ship captained by the pirate John Bannister. However, not only does Kurson's tale take us from the Dominican Republic to Europe to the States and back again, he also takes us into both the distant and more recent past as we delve into the lives not only of the infamous Bannister but also of Chatterton and Mattera. Pirates, mafia crime rings, German U-boats, battles against cancer and even diving experiences in the shadow of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001...it's all here in a fast-paced , well-researched piece of non-fiction, that reads like a combination adventure - historical fiction - detective novel.

Robert is a great documentarian, but his characters are already larger than life. John Chatterton MUST be the inspiration for Dirk Pitt. The depth of research necessary for this adventure shows how excruciatingly painful treasure hunting really is. This is one of the best stories I've ever read!

I really enjoyed this book . I felt like I was there too. I loved that pics at the end of the book . Iâ€™ve always thought it would be a great adventure to hunt for stuff in the ocean . You made a 73 yr. old ladies dream come true. It was really great. Thanks fellas for a chance at hunting the prize !! Mildred Dawson .

The wealthy in America have successfully constructed a false meritocracy where â€˜merit without meansâ€™ has grown increasingly difficult. Class mobility, as a result, has declined and fewer and fewer of our youth can expect to live better than their parents.Itâ€™s the universal law of unintended consequences. We replaced the old-boy, inherited wealth aristocracy with a true meritocracy. The meritorious among us, however, used their newfound mobility to create a world where class mobility has been commercialized. The children of the already wealthy, as a result, who have access to private schools, tutors, SAT prep classes, violin lessons, and the latest technology, have a material advantage in climbing their own ladder of merit.What distinguishes Brillâ€™s book is that he works harder than most authors on providing solutions, or at least finding and revealing people and institutions who have already made a difference (no, not Trump) and who offer a template for moving forward.Brill is informed across a wide spectrum of topics. He is, first and foremost, however, a journalist and it shows. The prose is easy to read but always backed up with plenty of data. At times, perhaps, just a tad too much. But thatâ€™s okay. He, more than most, makes it clear why we are all so disillusioned.This book will make you mad. And it should. Our politicians are dialing for dollars while Washington burns. And Brill has the connections and the writing skills to bring the heat into your living room.A very good book that no one will want to pick up a second time. But thatâ€™s okay. Sometimes we need a good whack to make sure weâ€™re still awake.

By the time they reach the end of this excellent book, readers may wonder that anything is still working in America for anyone other than the well-educated, the well-connected, and those wealthy enough to retreat to their financial and gated enclaves. (For examples, read the real estate section of the Friday edition of the Wall Street Journal.) After cataloging the depressing and interlocking shortcomings of American society over the last 50 years, Brill is still optimistic about the future, and includes many examples of people taking personal responsibility to foster the fading common good. Those who are more pessimistic than the author will recall that it took a vestigial socialist tradition, a Great Depression, and the Second World War to move America away from earlier tailspins. More recently, the organized opposition of millions of Americans to the Vietnam war failed to end that senseless conflict. Today millions of people are shocked by the level of gun violence in our country, but cannot organize around this issue to effect real change. I applaud the efforts of Brill and the many people who are challenging the system with real alternatives, but I fear that it will take a seismic cataclysm to relieve the present persistent nightmare.

A fantastic account of every court battle, regulation, and congressional act since the 50s that's lead America to where it is today; the country with the most most wealth inequality in the developed world. Reading this, it's clear how my generation of millenials was left with nothing but the scraps of a dying nation.

In this extensively researched book, Steve Brill concludes that â€œthe country has gone into a tailspin since the post-war eraâ€ with, among other things, increased income inequality, a deteriorating infrastructure, a high poverty rate, mediocre health care and student achievement and a dysfunctional and money corrupted Congress. He then goes into great detail to describe how this has come about and what some people are trying to do about it.One of his key findings is that meritocracy has become the new aristocracy. In other words, top students from the top law schools began to enjoy enormous incomes by working with big businesses to generate favorable legislation and regulations and devise ways to work around tax and other laws.Brill devotes several pages to what he calls the Greening of the First Amendment which has enabled businesses to spend considerable money in political campaign and requires legislators to spend substantial time raising campaign funds. He describes instances where the enormous amount spent on lobbying has prevented appropriate regulation and legislation.Brill laments that businesses that have been found to be serious law breakers are able to get by with fines that for many are just considered a cost of doing business while no action is taken against the executives who authorized or were aware of the unlawful activities.Overall, I found most of Brillâ€™s comments to be appropriate.Brill notes organizations trying to change things for the better, including the Bipartisan Policy Center, Better Markets, Open Secrets and Peter Edelman with Georgetownâ€™s poverty and inequality center.Brill ends with surprising optimism. â€œThings may get worse before they get better,â€ he says. But â€œAmericans â€¦are going to decide enough is enough.â€

Steven Brill is a brilliant man & a superb writer - I have read everything he has written. I like to get up early & read when it is nice & quiet, but I must say this book was difficult to read more than a chapter at a time because it is so depressing. It set the tone for my day as negative. Brill delineates the greed & corruption of our congress & the business world. His facts are true & that makes it all the more disheartening. And most disheartening of all is that the only hope he provides are in the last 3 pages of the book! How I wish it was not so.

I bought Volume One and Volume Two for teaching beginning level ESL. Pictures are valuable aids, but the scenarios included use vocabulary dialog that is above the level I expected. I feel that I will need to white out many of the dialogs to prevent confusion. Additionally, some of the terms sound stilted or downright foreign to my California ears. Headache tablet? We would say pain medicine or pills. Creased. You mean wrinkled? Book a table. You mean make a reservation? Rang the insurance company. You mean you called them? I will make adjustments so that I don't make them sound like a space alien. I will most likely alter and use about 30% of this material.

I don't think that these are very helpful for teaching or learning English. I teach ESL to adults and I bought both volumes. I still haven't used one page from either book for any of my lessons.. Mainly because the books are comic strips without words. You have to have the students insert the dialogue. This could be a supplemental activity if you are following some type of curriculum book. This would be for someone who has developed a great vocabulary and wanting to get extra practice.

Loved this book! Clear, easily understandable, and geared toward the everday needs of new English language learners. Shopping, transportation, banking, household items, greetings, and so on. An extra plus: they use pictures of adults instead of children. It is difficult to find beginning materials not geared toward children.Was delivered on time, in excellent condtion. Highly recommend this seller.
